K-WINGS SCARE BISON IN SO, EARN ORANGE ICE TREAT
Kalamazoo overcomes a two-goal deficit and claims first shootout win of the season.
KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Wings (2-1-2-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, beat Bloomington (4-0-0-1) in a dramatic shootout Saturday on the 22nd annual Orange Ice, presented by PNC, at Wings Event Center, 3-2.
In the shootout, Zach Urdahl scored in the second round, but Bloomington responded right away. Both teams were blanked until the fifth round, and that’s when Andre Ghantous stepped up and buried the puck into the top left corner. Mitchell Weeks (1-1-0-0) slammed the door shut after that, giving the K-Wings their first shootout victory of the season.
Bloomington took an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back tallies at 4:19 and 6:01 of the first period.
The K-Wings flipped the script in the second period and scored two of their own. Ryan St. Louis (1) scored his first professional goal at the 9:38 mark of the second period, receiving an incredible cross-crease pass from Dylan Wendt (5) on the power play. Rookie defenseman Travis Shoudy (2) earned the secondary helper on the play.
Kalamazoo rode the momentum from the first goal and added a second 32 seconds later. Noel Edfeldt (1) scored his first North American professional goal on a slapshot from the blueline through a crowd in front of the net. Edfeldt lit the lamp to tie the game at 10:10 of the second, assisted by Andre Ghantous (3) and Sean Chisholm (1).
The teams traded blows in the third period, including multiple power-play opportunities each, but neither side found the back of the net.
The K-Wings went 1-for-6 on the power play and were a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Mitchell Weeks (1-1-0-0) earned his first win with the K-Wings, stopping 33 of Bloomington’s 35 shots.
Next up, Kalamazoo hosts Toledo (3-2-0-0) at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, November 4, for 269 Night at Wings Event Center. Get your tickets HERE.
