K-WINGS NOTCH FIRST WIN, DRAIN ROYALS ON THE ROAD
Kalamazoo rides 33-save performance from Aku Koskenvuo for first win at Reading.
READING, PA – The Kalamazoo Wings (1-1-1-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, bounced back in Reading (3-1-0-0) Sunday with a 4-1 win at Santander Arena.
Aku Kosekenvuo (1-0-1-0) was outstanding in net, stopping 33 of 34 shots with multiple point-blank robberies.
Kalamazoo scored the first of the afternoon with a 6-on-4 man-advantage at the 8:38 mark of the second period. Tyler Gratton (2) jammed the puck into the back of the net through a crowd directly in front of the crease. Noah Ellis (2) and Zach Urdahl (1) assisted, giving them each points in both games this weekend.
K-Wings team captain Collin Saccoman (1) added a second goal just under two minutes later at the 10:08 mark of the second period. The defenseman blasted a slapshot from the top of the slot into the top-right corner of the net, while skating 4-on-4. Ryan Cox (1) and rookie defenseman Travis Shoudy (1) each recorded an assist on the goal, marking Shoudy’s first career point.
Konstantin Khremkin (1) gave the Wings a 3-0 lead on the power play with his first professional North American goal at the 8:26 mark of the third. On the play, Khremkin wristed a perfect slot setup into the back of the net. Khremkin was set up by Dylan Wendt (4) and Andre Ghantous (1) on the goal.
Reading scored on the power play at 12:02 of the third, and pulled the netminder with just over four minutes remaining. Moments later, Wendt (1) netted an empty-netter at 16:18, assisted by Brandon Buhr (1), to seal the win. Buhr’s assist also goes in the books as his first ECHL point.
The K-Wings went 2-for-7 on the power play, 4-for-5 on the penalty kill, and the Royals outshot the Wings 34-17.
