K-WINGS FALL TO THE ROYALS ON THE ROAD
Kalamazoo concedes early goal, and Reading never looks back in first game of two at Santander Arena.
KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Wings (0-1-1-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, drop the first of a two-game set against the Reading Royals (3-0-0-0) at Santander Arena, 3-1.
Zach Urdahl (2) scored his second goal of the new season to draw the K-Wings to within one on the power-play at the 12:26 mark of the second period. The forward jammed the puck in off the back of the Reading goalie, while parked next to the right post. Dylan Wendt (3) and rookie defenseman Noah Ellis (1) assisted on the goal, and the secondary assist for Ellis went in the books as his first professional point.
Reading jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, capitalizing on their first shot on target at 2:21 in the first period. The Royals doubled down with a shorthanded tally at the 2:07 mark of the second, and added another at 18:05.
Despite a late extra-man push from the K-Wings, the Royals scored an empty-netter with 22 seconds left in the third.
Mitchell Weeks (0-1-0-0) made his first start for Kalamazoo, stopping 20 of 23 shots on net, and the Wings outshot the Royals 25-24 through three periods.
The K-Wings went 1-for-4 on the power play and remained perfect on the penalty kill this season, going 3-for-3 on the kill.
