KALAMAZOO, MI - The Kalamazoo Wings (2-1-2-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, play four games this week with three at Wings Event Center. First, the K-Wings host Toledo (3-2-0-0) for 269 Night on Wednesday, November 4, at 7:00 p.m. Second, Toledo returns for Military Appreciation Night on Friday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Wings Event Center. Finally, the Wings host the Fort Wayne Komets (3-3-0-0) at Wings Event Center for Sensory Sunday + Kids Eat Free on Sunday, November 8, at 3:00 p.m.

Last week, the K-Wings went 1-0-1-0 (2-3 F/OT, 3-2 OT/SO).

Kalamazoo started the weekend off with a 3-2 F/OT loss to the Toledo Walleye Friday at the Home Opener, presented by Bronson. The date matched the same date Wings Event Center opened in 1974, and the K-Wings opened the game with a goal by Sean Chisholm just 17 seconds into the contest. Wings forward Andre Ghantous made it 2-0 minutes later, but Toledo scored two unanswered goals in the second period to knot the game. The game stayed locked at two until the 2:31 mark of OT, as Toledo netted the game-winner. Aku Koskenvuo (1-1-1-0) put on a historic show between the pipes Friday, turning aside 51 of 54 shots.

Kalamazoo returned to action Saturday for the 22nd edition of Orange Ice, and won in a shootout over the Bloomington Bison (4-0-0-1). The K-Wings fell behind 2-0 in the first but battled back in the second with two goals in 32 seconds. Rookie forward Ryan St. Louis scored his first pro goal on the power play at the 9:38 mark, and then defenseman Noel Edfeldt scored his first North American pro goal with a booming slapshot from the left point at the 10:10 mark. Netminder Mitchell Weeks (1-1-0-0) quarterbacked a 7-for-7 penalty kill performance, and forward Andre Ghantous netted the shootout winner after a scoreless third period and overtime frame.

RESULTS

Friday, Oct. 30 – Toledo at Kalamazoo (OTL, 3-2), Wings Event Center, Kalamazoo, MI |Box Score

>>  The Kalamazoo Wings (1-1-2-0) lost in overtime to the Toledo Walleye (2-1-0-0) in the Home Opener, 3-2. Aku Kosekenvuo (1-0-2-0) was dazzling in this one, setting a new career-high with 51 saves, including a 19-save second period. It took the Wings just 17 seconds to find the back of the net on Sean Chisholm’s (1) first career ECHL goal. Chisholm blasted a one-timer from the center of the slot via a wrap-around pass from Andre Ghantous. Ghantous (1) added a second for Kalamazoo at the 14:42 mark of the first period. The forward took the puck from his own blue line and wristed a shot into the top left corner on a 2-on-1 rush. Toledo tied up the game with back-to-back tallies. The first came on the power play at 12:05 and again even-strength at 18:42 of the second period. Neither team notched a goal in the third, before the Walleye added the overtime winner at the 2:31 mark. The K-Wings went 5-for-6 on the penalty kill, and the Walleye outshot the Wings in the contest 54-19.

Saturday, Oct. 31 – Bloomington at Kalamazoo (W, 3-2), Wings Event Center, Kalamazoo, MI | Box Score

>>  The Kalamazoo Wings (2-1-2-0) beat Bloomington (4-0-0-1) in a dramatic shootout Saturday on the 22nd annual Orange Ice, presented by PNC, at Wings Event Center, 3-2. In the shootout, Zach Urdahl scored in the second round, but Bloomington responded right away. Both teams were blanked until the fifth round, and that’s when Andre Ghantous stepped up and buried the puck into the top left corner. Mitchell Weeks (1-1-0-0) slammed the door shut after that, giving the K-Wings their first shootout victory of the season.  Bloomington took an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back tallies at 4:19 and 6:01 of the first period.  The K-Wings flipped the script in the second period and scored two of their own. Ryan St. Louis (1) scored his first professional goal at the 9:38 mark of the second period on the power play. Noel Edfeldt (1) then scored his first North American professional goal on a blueline slapshot through a crowd in front of the net. The K-Wings went 1-for-6 on the power play and were a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. Mitchell Weeks (1-1-0-0) earned his first win with the K-Wings, stopping 33 of Bloomington’s 35 shots.
