K-WINGS COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT AGAINST HEARTLANDERS

Kalamazoo scores three goals late, but Iowa takes the final game of the season.

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Wings (31-33-6-2), proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, fell to the Iowa Heartlanders (36-24-7-4) Sunday at Wings Event Center, 6-4.

Iowa struck first at the 8:43 mark of the first.

Jon Martin (3) tied things up for Kalamazoo at the 5:21 mark of the second. Spencer Kennedy (2) set up Jack Clement (16) for a shot that was blocked and came to Martin’s stick in the left circle, where he skated to the slot and ripped a wrist shot just inside the right post.

The Heartlanders scored three goals later in the middle frame, at the 12:46 mark on the power play, then at the 14:56 and 15:30 marks.

Iowa added two more in the third with another power-play tally at the 8:37 mark and a goal at the 10:02 mark.

Collin Saccoman (7) started the K-Wings’ comeback bid at the 11:21 mark. Antonio Venuto (2) found Lee Lapid (17) behind the Iowa net, and he fed Saccoman for a one-time blast from the right circle for the goal.

Then, Zach Berzolla (6) scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at the 15:46 mark. Berzolla gave the puck to Davis Pennington (3) in the right circle, and he sent it back for Berzolla’s one-time blast just inside the left post. Josh Bloom (18) earned the secondary assist on the power-play tally.

Berzolla (7) scored again on the power play at the 17:35 mark to get Kalamazoo within two. On the play, Bloom (19) found Zach Okabe (22) charging down the left side, and he fed Berzolla across the goalmouth to punch it home. The K-Wings pulled the goaltender late, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Ty Young (10-9-1-1) made 35 saves in defeat. Kalamazoo went 2-for-3 on the power play.

Kalamazoo finishes the season 31-33-6-2 and in fifth place in the Central Division.
