K-WINGS BATTLE TO FINISH LINE, FALL IN SHOOTOUT TO FUEL

Kalamazoo pushed Indy to the limit for all 67 minutes before Indy earned the extra point in the shootout.

BOX SCORE

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Wings (29-37-6-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Columbus Blue Jackets, left everything on the ice in the final game of the season versus the Indy Fuel (43-24-5-0), falling 3-2 in a shootout Sunday at Wings Event Center.

Hunter Vorva (13-9-2-1) was spectacular in net for the K-Wings, stopping 45 of 47 shots faced and helping Kalamazoo to a 5/5 performance on the penalty kill.

The K-Wings opened the scoring at the 3:09 mark of the first period off the stick of Collin Saccoman (4). Saccoman received a spectacular pass from Raymond Brice (6), who sent the puck from the boards near the goal line on the left side to Saccoman at the bottom of the right circle for the goal. Robert Calisti (20) earned the secondary assist, and Saccoman earned a five-game point streak (1g, 4a) with the goal.

Then, it was Aidan Spellacy (2) striking a rebound opportunity five-hole to make it 2-0 at the 11:44 mark. Brendan Bushy (2) sent the puck to Justin Taylor (21) for the initial shot, and Spellacy was waiting at the top of the crease to bang it home.

The Fuel got on the board with a goal at the 2:07 mark of the second period, and tied the game 2-2 at the 15:35 mark of the third.

Kalamazoo and Indy then battled through a scoreless overtime period with both sides earning multiple scoring chances. Two of the first three shooters for both sides were able to score on their shootout attempts, and the Fuel notched the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout.

The K-Wings enjoyed their highest attendance total since 1997-98 this season, averaging 3,537 fans through the gates this year.
