K-WINGS ACQUIRE SCHMIDT FROM WALLEYE
Kalamazoo trades for Toledo defenseman and releases another in separate transaction.
KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo Wings, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, announced Wednesday the team acquired defenseman Connor Schmidt from the Toledo Walleye in exchange for future considerations.
In a separate transaction, Kalamazoo released defenseman Brandon Lubin from his standard player contract.
Schmidt, 25, split the 2018-19 season between the Walleye and Southern Professional Hockey League’s Huntsville Havoc, ultimately helping the Havoc win their second straight President’s Cup. The Monroe, Michigan native tallied four points (2g, 2a) in 27 games for Toledo and re-signed with the Walleye in the off-season.
Schmidt spent his rookie season with the Tulsa Oilers in 2017-18 after finishing his college career at Utica College. He previously played for Ferris State University and Arizona State University.
Kalamazoo opens the season Saturday at 7:35 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The K-Wings will be hosting an official watch party at 7:00 p.m. out at Old Burdick’s at Wings West, featuring the game on the big screen, prizes and specials on food and drinks.
The K-Wings’ 46th Home Opener is Saturday, Oct. 19 against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:00 p.m. at the Wings Event Center, following Fan Fest leading up to the game.
