KALAMAZOO, MI—The Kalamazoo Wings, proud ECHL affiliates of the Vancouver Canucks, have re-signed forward Peter Schneider to a standard professional contract for the 2017-18 season, the team announced Monday.
Schneider, 26, is coming off a breakout 2016-17 campaign in which he tallied 21 goals and 34 assists in 61 regular season games. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound forward was acquired by the Wings in a November trade which brought him over from the Florida Everblades. Before the deal, he had earned five points (one goal, four assists) in ten games with Florida.
After stumbling out of the blocks for Kalamazoo, Schneider caught fire after the first of the year and chipped in 45 points (17 goals, 28 assists) in his last 40 games of the season. He ended the regular season on a 14-game point streak, which eventually stretched into the first six games of the Wings’ first-round playoff match-up with the Toledo Walleye. Schneider was second among Kalamazoo skaters in playoff scoring during 2016-17, as the winger scored five goals and added four assists in the seven-game series.
Schneider’s red-hot finish to the season was noticed all around the league, as his 22 points (13 goals, nine assists) in 14 games played in March earned him ECHL Player of the Month honors.
Through the first two full seasons of his pro career, the native of Vienna, Austria, has appeared in 135 ECHL games with Indy, Florida, and Kalamazoo. He has totaled 41 goals and 59 assists for 100-career points in the ECHL, and he has played to a +15 rating.
Prior to turning pro, Schneider was a USHL All-Star with the Indiana Ice (2010-11), and a four-year stand-out at Notre Dame from 2011-15. He was an assistant captain his senior season and was a member of the Fighting Irish’s CCHA Championship winning team during the 2012-13 campaign. Schneider has represented his native Austria multiple times on the international stage, including the 2010 World Junior Championships.
